5 Wacky Bed Bugs Facts

Everyone knows about bed bugs. They hide in beds and bite you while you sleep, and they are very hard to get rid of, but there are lots that most people don’t know about these pesky little creatures. In this post, the team at New Life Cleaning have put together some interesting facts about bed bugs.

They can live anywhere

When most people think of bed bugs, they think of third rate hostels, but the truth is, these little creatures can thrive anywhere. Homes, apartments, hospitals, dorm rooms, offices, schools, buses and movie theatres are just some of the places they can occur. In fact, according to a recent study 89 percent of pest professionals report treating bed bug infestations in family homes.

They’re not just city dwellers

While bed bugs prefer urban areas as they are highly populated, making their spread much faster and easier, they also occur in rural and remote areas. Anywhere that humans are, bed bugs can follow.

They’re super hardy

Bed bugs have strong survival instincts. They can survive a wide range of temperatures from almost freezing to up to 50 °C and they know how to stay hidden. These critters can linger in furniture, mattresses crevices, box springs, suitcases and clothing for a long time before they need a human host again. They’ve even been known to hide in baseboards, electrical fittings and picture frames to avoid detection.

 They have a pattern

Bed bugs have a very predicable feeding cycle. Once they find a human host, they will feed for five to ten minutes before becoming full. After feeding they hide in secluded places for five to ten days, digesting, mating and laying eggs.

They are anaesthesiologists

When a bed bug bites, you won’t feel it because their salvia acts as an anaesthetic, while promoting blood flow at the bite site. This means their bites are quick and nearly painless, so they don’t wake you as they feed.
